2. Building the Foundations
The communities of Ceduna, Koonibba, Oak Valley, Scotdesco and Yalata lie in the Far West Region of South Australia. The Far West Aboriginal Corporation look after the country on behalf of the Far West Coast traditional owners, the Mirning people, the Wirangu people, the Kokatha people, the Yalata people, the Maralinga Tjarutja people, and the descendants of Edward Roberts. In 2016, the population of the Far West was 3,321. In addition to Pitjantjatjara, Gugada/Kokatha, Mirning and Wirangu are spoken in the Far-West region.
The Far West Aboriginal Communities Leaders Group advocates across the Far West region to improve the social and economic status of Aboriginal families and communities, taking a regional approach. The group comprises the of Chairpersons and Chief Executive Officers of the five local Aboriginal corporations (Koonibba Community Aboriginal Corporation, Yalata Anangu Aboriginal Corporation, Scotdesco Aboriginal Corporation, Ceduna Aboriginal Corporation, and the Maralinga Tjarutja Lands Oak Valley Community).
